Home is where you make it

One issue that made me really worried about coming to the University of Salford, was my accommodation. Leaving Nigeria for the first time, I was enthusiastic about the prospects and challenges I will have to face living outside Nigeria. And while I marvel at the opportunity of coming to further my education in the UK, the apprehension of leaving my home brought more perturbed feelings. I knew if I was to settle-in comfortably in my new abode, my getting a suitable accommodation cannot be over-emphasized.

The first thing I did after getting my conditional offer for admission to the University of Salford was to seek where I will stay. The University of Salford also made this easy through their website which links you to accommodation available on campus. So I got busy. A few students’ hostels are available on campus and all first year undergraduate and postgraduate students, including international students, are guaranteed a place in university accommodation (Good! No need to panic).

John Lester Court

Checking through the school’s accommodation website, I gently scrutinized my available options, putting priority on my privacy and comfort. Alas, I came to a conclusion; John Lester Court. 

Why?

Well, most of the available students’ accommodation offered similar features i.e. single rooms with shared kitchen and bathrooms, all fully furnished (though at different prices) and large social room/lounge but John Lester court offered the added bonus of an onsite gym (I’ll get to trim my abs and maybe…just maybe add a bit more muscles). I also had the alternative of choosing private accommodation in Salford, but since it was my first time in Salford, I opted for campus accommodation and the opportunity to live and socialize with other international students like me.

And you know, it was all worth it. Getting to Salford for the very first time in mid September last year, I headed straight for my chosen accommodation. I was warmly received by the campus living village reception (CLV) in John Lester court and shown my room (where I’ll be staying for the next 1 year).

 At this point, I was feeling less perturbed and I knew everything was going to be okay. Some welcome activities were organized by campus living village which really help me in settling-in and socializing with new students like me from various cultures and background. And so! life in Salford started....

Five months now, living in Salford as been as interesting as it was on my first day.
