While in Salford, don’t forget to have fun (1)

For those who love to have fun when its dark (night owls), Manchester city center is a haven of social life. Just 10 minutes away (by bus) from the University of Salford, the city center harbors an assortment of restaurants, bars and night clubs. So either you like rap, hiphop, jazz, techno or salsa, you’ll always find where to have fun in the city center.
Like the saying goes “All work and no play, make jack a dull boy”, the city center offers students, party lovers and night owls a place to unwind after a hectic week of studying. And due to the large students’ population in Manchester, you are guaranteed a good time either you are a party ‘animal’ or you just want to relax and make new friends.

So how do I know this?

Well, you don’t need to guess, it’s because I have had a feel of the night life myself.
My first night out was in September, a few weeks after I got to Salford, I had just made new friends and we went out for some fun. We had a wonderful time together and till now, we still squeeze out time to have some fun.
When you think about how much fun you can have its hard not to get carried away, but you need to experience it to believe it.

So come to Salford, have some fun!.

Home is where you make it

One issue that made me really worried about coming to the University of Salford, was my accommodation. Leaving Nigeria for the first time, I was enthusiastic about the prospects and challenges I will have to face living outside Nigeria. And while I marvel at the opportunity of coming to further my education in the UK, the apprehension of leaving my home brought more perturbed feelings. I knew if I was to settle-in comfortably in my new abode, my getting a suitable accommodation cannot be over-emphasized.

The first thing I did after getting my conditional offer for admission to the University of Salford was to seek where I will stay. The University of Salford also made this easy through their website which links you to accommodation available on campus. So I got busy. A few students’ hostels are available on campus and all first year undergraduate and postgraduate students, including international students, are guaranteed a place in university accommodation (Good! No need to panic).

John Lester Court
Checking through the school’s accommodation website, I gently scrutinized my available options, putting priority on my privacy and comfort. Alas, I came to a conclusion; John Lester Court.

Why?

Well, most of the available students’ accommodation offered similar features i.e. single rooms with shared kitchen and bathrooms, all fully furnished (though at different prices) and large social room/lounge but John Lester court offered the added bonus of an onsite gym (I’ll get to trim my abs and maybe…just maybe add a bit more muscles). I also had the alternative of choosing private accommodation in Salford, but since it was my first time in Salford, I opted for campus accommodation and the opportunity to live and socialize with other international students like me.

And you know, it was all worth it. Getting to Salford for the very first time in mid September last year, I headed straight for my chosen accommodation. I was warmly received by the campus living village reception (CLV) in John Lester court and shown my room (where I’ll be staying for the next 1 year).
My lovely room
At this point, I was feeling less perturbed and I knew everything was going to be okay. Some welcome activities were organized by campus living village which really help me in settling-in and socializing with new students like me from various cultures and background. And so! life in Salford started....

Five months now, living in Salford as been as interesting as it was on my first day.
My room is on the 12th floor………… lovely view mates.
No regrets coming to Salford, home is where you make it.

Who's says reading can't be fun!

Hello all,

I had a nice day today, i didn't have any classes but spent most of the day in the school's Clifford library. Salford Uni has three libraries; Clifford, Adelphi and Allerton, the biggest is Clifford library.

Some friends and i got together to study since we didn't have classes today (keeping the brain fresh!). We earlier decided to book a private study room in the library, so we wouldn't have to study in the general area, which is usually a little noisy (discussion zone) or too quiet (quiet zone).

Booking the private study room was easy, and this being our first time of booking, we believed having a room all to ourselves meant we could discuss at length and at our convenience.

And yes, it was a brilliant idea, i was surprised to see that the private room also has a projector screen (audio/visual learning aid) as were in normal classrooms. This really made the private room quite suited to our purpose, comfortable and our discussions were particularly enjoyable.

Who's says reading can't be fun!

After hours in the library, i decided to end my reading earlier than my mates......truth is, i was kinda hungry....
ok...ok, i was really hungry.

So i grabbed my stuff, disappeared from my mates and headed straight home........ not to Nigeria(lol!), to my uni accomodation. yeah and someone special was waiting for me..........see you later folks

Getting to Salford

Hello again.
Am back after a few days of lectures. Am still trying to get used to blogging, finding it kinda strange.
Well, back to telling you more about my journey to Salford, I have to mention what mainly influenced my decision to study at Salford uni, MONEY! (Lol! off course MONEY!).

While I was in Nigeria, choosing a UK university to study in was a kinda difficult, because really, there's just so many of them. So I had to take my time and prioritized what was most important to me 'getting a high standard quality of education at an internationally recognized university and at a considerably cost'.
And yea, a lot of these uni's are internationally recognized but Salford uni had something extra special for students. Salford uni offers scholarships worth up to £5,000 to international students based on academic merit, knowing fully well that there are some of us out there, academically sound but without the proper finances to seek quality UK education. Seeing such an offer I couldn't resist, I graduated with a 2:1 (second class upper division) degree, I had to find out if it was really true and that easy, so I applied.

And few months later, I got conditional offer for admission from the uni, stating that I had been awarded their International Excellence Scholarship for £2,000 pounds.
That’s a lot of money? Yea, it is.
That sounds easy? Yea, it was.

For me, 2,000 pounds played a big part in helping me decide which uni I was going to.

But that’s not all, some individual courses also have different scholarships available to them and there are other sources of funding offered by Salford uni to international students from Nigeria and other countries.

Check out my next blog soon, for me, no lectures today and am off to Manchester City Center for some fun!
